An advocate is an independent person who is there for you. They can help you understand your rights, explain what you want and make sure adults listen to your wishes and feelings.
What can an advocate help with?
Making your voice heard
They can help you say what you think in meetings and decisions about your life.
Understanding your rights
They can explain information, plans and choices in a way that makes sense to you.
Speaking up about a problem
They can help if you feel unsafe, unhappy, ignored or worried about where you live or the support you receive.
Making a complaint
They can help you understand your options, put your concern into words and support you in meetings.
Asking for an advocate or raising a concern will not be used against you and will not reduce the support you receive.
How to ask for independent advocacy
Central Bedfordshire Council says that a young person can request an independent advocate for themselves. An adult can also request one on behalf of a child or young person. Contact the council to check eligibility and make a request.
